পরিবেশ থেকে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের অপসারণ এবং পুনরায় পরিবেশে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের সংযােজনের মাধ্যমে কার্বন চক্র সম্পূর্ণ হয়। 
 

Carbon cycle shows the movement of carbon in elemental and combined states on earth. Diamond and graphite are the elemental forms of carbon and in combined state, it is found as carbonates in minerals and as carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere.

কার্বন চক্র কাকে বলে?

পরিবেশ এবং জীবজগতের মধ্যে যে চক্রাকার পদ্ধতিতে কার্বন মৌল কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড যৌগ রূপে পরিবেশ থেকে জীব জগতে প্রবেশ করে এবং পুনরায় জীব জগৎ থেকে পরিবেশে ফিরে এসে বাতাসে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের স্বাভাবিক মাত্রা বজায় রাখে, তাকে কার্বন চক্র বলে ।

Carbon cycle is the process where carbon compounds are interchanged among the biosphere, geosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere of the earth.

১৷ নির্গম পথ – যে ভৌত, রাসায়নিক ও জৈবিক ক্রিয়ায় কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড জীব জগৎ থেকে পরিবেশে নির্গত হয় তাকে নির্গম পথ বলে।

(ক) ভৌত ক্রিয়া – আগ্নেয় গিরির অগ্নুৎপাত উষ্ণ প্রসবনের স্রোত প্রভৃতি থেকে বাতাসে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের সংযোগ ঘটে।

(খ) রাসায়নিক ক্রিয়া – কলকারখানার কয়লার দহন, কাঠের দহন, জ্বালানীর দহনে বাতাসে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের সংযোগ ঘটে।

(গ) জৈবিক ক্রিয়া – সবুজ উদ্ভিদ, স্থলজ ও জলজ প্রাণী শ্বসন ক্রিয়ায় বাতাসে কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড মুক্ত করে।

২৷ আগম পথ – যে ভৌত, রাসায়নিক ও জৈবিক ক্রিয়ায় কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড পরিবেশ থেকে জীব জগতে প্রবেশ করে, তাকে আগম পথ বলে।

(ক) ভৌত ক্রিয়া – বাতাসের কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড জলে দ্রবীভূত হয় যা জলজ উদ্ভিদ ও শৈবাল সালোকসংশ্লেষ প্রক্রিয়ায় খাদ্য তৈরির জন্য গ্রহণ করে।

(খ) রাসায়নিক ক্রিয়া – বাতাসের কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড বৃষ্টির জলের সঙ্গে বিক্রিয়া করে কার্বলিক অ্যাসিড গঠন করে। বৃষ্টির জলের সাথে ওই অ্যাসিড সমুদ্র, নদী ও পুকুরে স্থানান্তরিত হয়। শামুক জাতীয় প্রাণীর দেহে অবস্থিত ক্যালসিয়াম হাইড্রক্সাইড জলে দ্রবীভূত কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইডের সাথে ক্রিয়া করে ক্যালসিয়াম কার্বনেট গঠন করে।

(গ) জৈবিক ক্রিয়া – স্থলজ ও জলজ সবুজ উদ্ভিদ সালোকসংশ্লেষ প্রক্রিয়ায় শর্করা জাতীয় খাদ্য তৈরির জন্য বাতাসের কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড ও জলে দ্রবীভূত কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড গ্রহণ করে।

  1. Carbon present in the atmosphere is absorbed by plants for photosynthesis.
  2. These plants are then consumed by animals and carbon gets bioaccumulated into their bodies.
  3. These animals and plants eventually die, and upon decomposing, carbon is released back into the atmosphere.
  4. Some of the carbon that is not released back into the atmosphere eventually become fossil fuels.
  5. These fossil fuels are then used for man-made activities, which pumps more carbon back into the atmosphere.
